The Dark Forces of the Culture War

The dark forces of US politics continue to spread havoc and deception. When are voters going to recognize the evil ones? Locally, I’m thinking of Tim Eyeman, and nationally, Bill Frist.

Yesterday, even conservative evangelical leaders acknowledged Eyeman cannot be trusted. Their favorite issue, hatred of gays, failed to reach the November ballot because Eyeman didn’t gather the needed signatures. "We are frustrated," remarked one neo-facist Christian. Many preachers and hate-mongers want to retract the recently passed gay rights law, signed by the governor early this year. The new law takes effect today, making Washington the 17th state to enact such protection for gay and lesbian citizens.

Personally, I’m thankful Tim Eyeman was involved. His for-profit initiative machine likes to steal all the attention and press. It’s all about Tim Eyeman, and not really about the issues. What better way to set a course for failure?

Now, Eyeman is promoting another intiative. It would return car tabs to $30 in King county. Never mind that the citizens in King County are the ones who chose to raise their own taxes in order to fund transit systems. We need farmers in Walla Walla telling us in Seattle how much our taxes should be?

It’s about people in Spokane and Wenatchee voting to repeal taxes adopted in King County," Republican consultant Chris Vance told the Seattle Post Intelligencer. Even the Republican mainstream now loathes Eyeman. The former GOP chairman thinks Eyman is damaging "the legitimate perception of the initiative process. When you’ve got a clown out there in a Darth Vader suit lying to the press and things like that, it’s not good for the initiative and referendum process.

Eyeman is cut from the same cloth as Senate Majority Leader Bill Facist ( I mean Frist). As usual, the Republicans want less federal government in your wallet, but more in my bedroom. The Senate’s attempt to ammend the US Constitution to outlaw gay marriage in EVERY state (even those who freely choose it) failed for the second time yesterday.

According to the PI, Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell were getting more frustrated and angry. Like most Democrats — and even some Republicans — Murray and Cantwell have sharply criticized the Senate’s Republican leadership for taking three weeks from a tight schedule to debate constitutional amendments on gay marriage and flag burning and on banning the estate tax. Even though they know these issues are all destined for failure since several Republicans refuse to tow the party line.

To all my friends and family members who voted for George Bush…this is what you get! You get a party that’s controlled by fundamentalists who care nothing about deficits, war, or human rights. What they care about is my sex life AND cutting my taxes (yeah, we are in the upper 5 percent for per capita income!) You get a nation with a rising international reputation for hypocracy and a widening gap between the rich and the poor – not to mention a military that is stretched to the limit.

Is that what you wanted in 2004? I hope so – now you have got it. I told you so.
